    Blodeuwedd: The Flower-Faced Owl

In Welsh myth, the hero Lleu Llaw Gyffes was placed under a powerful curse by his mother, Arianrhod. She decreed that he would never have a human wife. To break this curse, the magicians Math and Gwydion used their craft to create a bride for Lleu from flowers—oak, broom, and meadowsweet. From these blossoms they conjured the fairest maiden ever seen, and named her Blodeuwedd, meaning “Flower-Face.”

Lleu and Blodeuwedd were married, and for a time, they appeared happy. But while Lleu was away, Blodeuwedd fell in love with Gronw Pebr, the lord of Penllyn. The two lovers plotted to kill Lleu.

Gronw struck Lleu with a magical spear, but instead of dying, Lleu transformed into an eagle and flew away, wounded and wild.       Gwydion searched for his friend, and by singing a powerful incantation, he returned Lleu to his human form.

Gwydion and Math nursed Lleu back to health—and then turned their wrath upon Blodeuwedd. As punishment for her betrayal,     Gwydion transformed Blodeuwedd into an owl, declaring:

“You will never dare show your face again in the light of day. There will be enmity between you and all other birds. It will be in their nature to harass and shun you because of your treachery. But your name will remain—Blodeuwedd, or ‘Flower-Face.”

And so, the owl—once a maiden of flowers—became a solitary creature of the night, shunned by the birds of day, yet forever carrying the name and memory of her past.
