Moon Dancer – Moon Myths

As the most striking feature of the night sky, it’s no surprise that countless myths and wondrous stories surround the moon. Our early ancestors were in awe of its silver light—soft, serene, and ever-changing. With its constant waxing and waning, the moon became a powerful symbol of magic, renewal, fertility, and womanhood.

The Romans called her Luna, and believed she held the power to mask reality, pierce illusions, awaken intuition, and spark visions. These visions were born from the mysteries of the night and the fleeting truths found in dreams. Many believed that the moon could reveal answers through sleep, as the subconscious mind unraveled its secrets. Yet, this same influence gave rise to dark prophecies and from such moon-induced madness came the word “lunatic.”

Selene and Endymion

In Greek mythology, the moon is personified as Selene, a radiant goddess and daughter of the Titans. She was sister to Helios, the Sun god, and Eos, the rosy-fingered goddess of the dawn.

Selene fell in love with a beautiful mortal named Endymion. So great was her love that she asked Zeus to grant him eternal youth, so they could be together forever. But Zeus’s gifts often came with a price. Endymion was granted eternal youth—but also eternal sleep.

Still, Selene was a goddess, and not even sleep could keep her from him. She visited Endymion each night, and together they had fifty daughters. Among Selene’s other divine children were the Horae—goddesses and personifications of the four seasons: Winter, Spring, Summer, and Autumn.
