Under Milk Wood
At the age of 25 I fell in love with Under Milk Wood by Dylan Thomas, not just because of the descriptive qualities of the language but also because I felt that I personally knew all the characters in the play. Recently I discovered that both Thomas and I were familiar with the same areas and people. I spent my childhood camping in the same fields on the Gower Peninsula as Thomas did when he was a young man. As a student I lived in Swansea and still have family within a stones throw of Cwmdonkin Park.
Now, over half a lifetime later, I am in a position to illustrate the text that has meant so much to me. Between 2021 and 2023 I will be creating 15 to 20 pencil illustrations inspired by this beloved text. When all the illustrations are complete, and with a little bit of help, I would like to be able to exhibit all the images in November 2023. This will coincide with the seventieth anniversary of Thomas's death so the exhibition will be my personal tribute to this man and his most famous work. But it will be a long road, I have to fit this mammoth project around other commissioned work. As you can see I plan to create images that are as visually dense and complex as the text itself.
I invite you to join me and watch as the illustrations take shape...
